STATION ROSE: Thick Pictures gifart_020916 | 3-fold Bundle

The 3-fold series “gifart_020916” by Vienna-based artist couple STATION ROSE belongs to the group of “Thick Images”. The artists developed thick images in 2013 as a STATION ROSE system expansion. Thick images emerge from the wall, they have a sculptural moment, as one-offs and especially in hanging as a group. They let side SToRies run off on the thick sidewalls. They can also be augmented.

The hanging – especially in series – also allows for various possible types of games, be it hung from bottom to top, from left to right, around the axis turned, etc.  Thick images are unique. They can be hung in Tetris-like again and again. Thick images expand forward in space and are lightweights.

The 3-series thick images “gifart_020916” works with the model of the GIFAni sequences. It creates the feeling that the Gif-Ani reproduces serially in front of the viewer. In addition, with the further layer of augmented reality, which lays down on an image as a pop-up (-the one with the biggest pattern, see photo), and scores with electronic music, so the art form of the Gif-Ani expands, which is otherwise tone-free. Since 1995, STR Gif-Anis & has remained faithful to this style form, even in re-materialization in the form of thickness images.

The images “gifart_020916” belong to the Group of Thick Pictures Series 02, which was created for the exhibition and installation “Parallel Vienna 2016.”

In 2018, it was updated with augmented reality. Audio-visual loops are an important STR art form. Thick images are perfect for playing these LOOPS in a more or less endless way. In conjunction with another player such as iPad, Beamer & Bluetooth Box, a room installation is also possible.

The deliberately reduced pale colors of the thickness images “gifart_020916” are transformed into opulent colors in the augmentation. This loop was performed by Elisa Rose & Gary Danner on the iPads & mobile phones live in their installation at Parallel Vienna 2016. Now he lands final at the Dicken picture, where he permanently changes his size in a back and forth zooming.

The sound to the one augmented thickness image is an improvisation on the mobile phone. The minimalism given by this technical limitation is tonally reminiscent of Radiophonic Workshop, Detroit Techno and Terry Riley.
