Gretchen Andrew has an exhibition entitled Trust Boundary at the Francisco Carolinum in Linz, Austria.
The American artist Gretchen Andrew (*1988, Los Angeles) describes herself as a “Search Engine Artist” and thus defines herself as a representative of an art movement based on the manipulation of search engines. Andrew uses her experience as a computer scientist at Google with the aim of artistically processing search terms on current topics. Their computer-generated, femininely connoted visual language resists male dominance in the field of programming as well as in politics and business.
In her current series of works, Andrew associates topics related to the European Union. The search for “Map of the EU” now also shows Gretchen Andrew’s pink picture collage as a result – artistically free including Great Britain, as if Brexit had never happened.
At first glance, image collages like these seem like overloaded, harmless handicrafts, but they are powerful misinformation in image form to change digital reality. Because it is artistically important for Andrew to articulate her concerns visually and to realize them on a virtual meta-level. As a performance artist on the Internet, she moves virtuosically in the grey area of “trust boundaries”.
