Project “Eternity”: A 330 kg pyramid made of ice will hang upside down in the central bay of the Gothic Church of Our Lady in Bremen from Ash Wednesday, February 14, 2024.
The ice pyramid is melting. But it does not disappear. It changes from a solid to a liquid state of water. The water is collected in a bowl on the floor. Accordingly, according to the conception of the Gothic period, light descends to matter in order to transform it and turn it into the spiritual.
The melting process begins gradually. Not a drop falls for a long time. At some point, the first drop. A long break. The second drop. The intervals between the drops become shorter and shorter. At first it seems to take forever, then it proceeds faster and faster. The way many people experience their own lifetime. Or the way we perceive climate change. The melting process is inevitable. And nobody knows how long it will last.
Due to the excellent acoustics of the church, every drop can be heard throughout the room. The decrease in volume of the pyramid is only noticeable at certain intervals. The sound enables a finer perception of the disappearance of the ice. We hear the disappearance with each drop sound and with the increase in the speed of the drop sounds. A monophonic sound work emerges with the disappearance of the pyramid.
